Ecstasy Over Agony is a visual chronicle of Budge’s struggles and joys amid the Covid-19 pandemic. She was struck by the potential severity of the virus upon first hearing the news late in January. Of the effect the pandemic has had on her new work she says, "There have been so many changes and tragedies that it would take pages to document. In the midst of it all, there are moments filled with abundant beauty and joy. There is time now to reassess our values and priorities. I am blessed to have more quality time with people I love than I ever would have without the lockdown. Pain and challenges persist, but love and happiness prevail. Ecstasy reigns over agony.”
Spontaneously working in the studio making sculpture is what drives Budge. Her hands form objects, leaving her mind to decipher the rationale, desire, or meaning within the work. Sometimes the explanation is obscure, other times it is right on the surface. Shapes emerge based on the moments of life that stimulate, intrigue, stir, or sustain. Hunger, provocation, satisfaction, ultimately the works signify these daily things that we struggle with, want, need, or celebrate.
